Tube Amplifier by Case-Real for Elekit

Japanese designer Koichi Futatsumata, founder of Case-Real studio, has designed a vacuum tube amplifier for electronics manufacturer Elekit. Elekit traditionally manufacture affordable, high-end audio equipment in kit form. Fatsumata was commissioned to design an amplifier that would be sold ready-assembled to appeal to a younger generation. The prototype shown largely follows the established typology of tube amplifiers but the circuitry and mechanical parts that are usually left exposed to aid cooling are hidden inside the steel casing. Instead, the aluminium top from which the vacuum tubes protrude acts as a heat-sink to dissipate heat from the components.

All the controls have been integrated into two front-mounted aluminium dials. ELEKIT TUBE AMPLIFIERby Koichi Futatsumata / CASE-REAL. Design of a new generation vacuum tube amplifier for EK Japan Co., Ltd.(Fukuoka, Japan) who develops numerous electronic kits/ gadgets targeted at both children and adults. Traditionally, the types of assembly audio kits EK JAPAN has developed have been largely for audio or mechanical maniacs, for an affordable price, thereby serving their quality of life by way of spending time to assemble and then to enjoy the audio from what they have made. The direction of a project commissioned to us this time was completely different and was to design a compact, stylish vacuum tube audio consonant with the life style of young generations novice about vacuum tube but are naively interested in the charm and atmosphere created from/ via a vacuum tube amplifier.

The prototype, as shown in the photo, is an embodiment of the concept which symbolically gives an accent on vacuum tubes on the top, supported by aluminum dials on the front integrating all controls thereinto and by the sides made of cast steel. So that a vacuum tube light stands out, the mechanical structure and parts are kept inside and the top aluminum plate functions as a heat sink instead. The circuitry a hybrid configuration, and, on the right side is a mini- jack for portable music players like iPod.

Speedcast strikes US$135M buyout of US-based infrastructure provider

Speedcast International has entered into an agreement to acquire US-based remote communications and multi-network infrastructure provider for US$135 million. The Australian-listed satellite telecommunications service provider told shareholders on 28 August the acquisition is set to strengthen Speedcast’s global competitive position in government, maritime and enterprise sectors. Speedcast will acquire the business from affiliates of HPS Investment Partners, LLC Tennenbaum Capital Partners, LLC and certain other members of Globecomm. Globecomm Systems is present in 100 countries, and estimates US$15 million in annual cost synergies within 18 months after the acquisition. Specifically, the acquisition will be funded by a fully underwritten US$175 million add-onto Speedcast’s existing seven‐year senior secured credit facility from the US institutional term loan market, which will also be used to repay a portion of Speedcast’s revolving credit facility and thus enhance Speedcast’s liquidity position.

The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2018, subject to the completion of customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.

Ray Wholohan, Coordinator, Griffith Regional Art Gallery :: MGNSW

Another in our series of interviews with regional and public gallery directors. Ray Wholohan was trained on the job as Curatorial Assistant at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery from 2004 until 2008 while studying Fine Arts. In 2008, Ray was awarded a Curatorial Mentorship from Museums & Galleries of NSW and was sent to the Hazelhurst Regional Art Gallery & Arts Centre for an insightful two weeks. In 2009, Ray, like many others found himself wandering the country to establish a career and found himself in Victoria curating an exhibition for the Next Wave Festival and briefly working for the La Trobe Regional Art Gallery. Ray commenced work at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, working with the Memorial’s vast art collection.

In 2013, after relishing his time at the Australian War Memorial, Ray returned home to Wagga Wagga to undertake his PhD research into regional art galleries in the Riverina/Murray region. Ray and his young family now call Griffith home after Ray was appointed Regional Gallery Coordinator in January 2015. Ray works with a small but enthusiastic team in the heart of the fertile Riverina.

Football Match Report

Ryan Sessegnon scored his 15th goal of the season as Fulham moved into second place in the Championship with a 3-0 victory at playoff-chasing Millwall. The 17-year-old, recently voted Championship player of the season, reacted first to a Jordan Archer fumble to consign Millwall to their first league defeat since New Year’s Day. Kevin McDonald doubled the visitors’ lead with a sensational long-range strike before Aleksandar Mitrovic’s effort late on moved Fulham two points clear of Cardiff, who have two games in hand. The defeat keeps Millwall in sixth place, a point clear of Derby, who face play-off rivals Middlesbrough on Saturday. Millwall looked to assert themselves early on and almost had their reward after three minutes but Jake Cooper’s free header at the back post cannoned off the crossbar.

The Lions thought they had the opening goal after 15 minutes when Jed Wallace headed down for George Saville to rifle home from close range but referee Andre Marriner adjudged Wallace had fouled defender Matt Targett. It took 23 minutes for Fulham to finally come into the game and it was Sessegnon who was causing all the problems. Neil Harris’ team were looking to cement their place in the top six and should have been in front in the 29th minute when Marcus Bettinelli pushed Ben Marshall’s cross straight into the path of Wallace but the midfielder’s effort was cleared off the line by Tim Ream. Targett has scored once since arriving at Fulham on loan from Southampton in January and almost doubled his tally as his long-range effort clipped the bar. Fulham needed a spark and they got it 45 seconds into the second half as Archer fumbled a long-range effort from Mitrovic into the path of Sessegnon who had the pace and the composure to thunder the ball underneath the goalkeeper.

Stefan Johansen almost doubled the lead two minutes later but the Norway international scuffed his effort wide after going through one-on-one with Archer. Mitrovic netted a third a minute from time as a driving run from substitute Tomas Kalas found the striker on the edge of the box and the Serbian smashed the ball home.

Global air growth slows markedly in March; end of restock cycle to blame – CSCMP’s Supply Chain Quarterly

Demand slows to pace not seen in nearly two years, IATA says. After a long string of gains that reminded industry veterans of the halcyon days of the 1990s, when seemingly every ton of goods went on a plane, international air freight demand hit a wall in March, slowing to a pace not seen in nearly two years due to the end of a strong cycle of inventory restocking, the International Air Transport Association said yesterday. The leading global airline trade group said that freight ton-kilometers, defined as one ton of freight flown one kilometer, rose 1.7 percent in March compared to the same period in 2017. Freight capacity year over year gained 4.4 percent in March, IATA said. Though capacity in March grew at a slower pace than in the prior month, it still represented the first time in 20 months that capacity exceeded demand, IATA said.

One of the hallmarks of the current expansion cycle is that airlines have been able to keep control of their capacity in spite of significant demand growth. IATA has forecast that freight demand would slow once the current restocking cycle runs its course. Over the past 12-18 months, businesses rapidly increased their inventories to meet unusually strong end demand. IATA also reported a slowing in global trade activity, whose strength in recent months had pundits talking about a synchronized worldwide economic recovery. Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s director general and CEO, said the group expects demand in 2018 to increase by 4 to 5 percent.

Growth in the Asia-Pacific region, the largest in terms of global freight share, barely budged in March, up 0.7 percent from 2017 levels. Latin America represents 2.7 percent of the global market.
