Winter Storm Hunter Is Already Bearing Down on the U.S.

It’s expected to hit an area from Washington State to Mississippi and the Northeast. Just a week after Winter Storm Grayson pounded the East Coast with heavy snow and record chills, an even bigger storm is threatening most of the U.S. with blizzards and ice. Winter Storm Hunter began hitting much of the U.S. Wednesday, with its first phase bringing snow, freezing rain or sleet to the Plains and the Midwest.

The second phase is expected to sweep east with ice and freezing rain Thursday through Saturday night across the Tennessee Valley, Ohio Valley, The Great Lakes and up into the interior Northeast. On Thursday, the storm has brought blizzard conditions into Bismarck, the Grand Forks, and Salina, spreading snow into the Texas panhandle and into Michigan by Thursday evening. The latest forecast shows that the storm will continue marching into the eastern Great Lakes and into the Ohio Valley through Friday, bringing rainy conditions to New York, Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, Knoxville, and Burlington and snow in Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Traverse City by Friday night. As the storm continues to move into the weekend, cities including Detroit and Indianapolis can expect snowy and wet conditions arriving on Friday, and will want to keep their eyes out for possible closures according to the Weather Channel’s latest forecast. Slippery roads and spotty power outages are still expected in cities that include Boston, Portland, New York, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Cincinnati, Charleston, Cleveland, Paducah, Memphis, Louisville, and Nashville throughout Saturday.

The National Weather Service has put out winter storm watches, warnings, and advisories for areas from Mississippi to the central Plains and the Rockies. The storm will also bring snow into the Washington Cascades and northern Rockies, eastern Montana, northwest Wisconsin, and Michigan’s western Upper Peninsula, causing potentially harzardous roads, bridges, and overpasses. By Friday, Pennsylvania, upstate and central New York, and northern New England can expect freezing rain, with snow lingering into Saturday. Heavy ice buildup and rapidly plunging temperatures – and risks of power cuts – are expected for an area stretching from Mississippi to Quebec, according to AccuWeather.

Nashville Travel Guide

For many years, if a non-Tennessean thought about Nashville at all, it was probably in the context of country music, health-care organizations, or the Swan Ball. All that still exists today-the Grand Ole Opry, the medical indus-try, and the old money-but none of it explains why, seemingly out of nowhere, Nashville has become the glamour capital of the South. New restaurants are being built on seasonal ingredients, with styles ranging from the chef-driven tasting menus at the Catbird Seat to the reworked American classics at Pinewood Social to the new-wave Indian cooking at Chauhan Ale & Masala House. As novelist and songwriter Alice Randall, coauthor of the cookbook Soul Food Love, points out, Nashville has always been a city of good food-it’s just that in the past, the best kitchens were at home. Though the restaurant scene definitely has a locavore bent, it has pulled back from the aesthetic of Mason jars and reclaimed wood.

Of course, Nashville was, is, and always will be Music City, and it has long welcomed tourists eager to bask in the nostalgia of the Opry, buy a pair of cowboy boots, and hoof it at a honky-tonk. The difference is that now, in-the-know locals buy their boots-handmade in Italy-at Peter Nappi, says transplant Connie Britton, a star of ABC’s lauded series Nashville. The wide-ranging impact of Nashville’s legacy is on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum-a must-see, according to Patchett. The Gulch, another emerging area, is home to the five-room 404 Hotel-its restaurant, the 404 Kitchen, was shortlisted for a James Beard Award-as well as the gallery Sherrick & Paul, where David Zwirner alum Susan Sherrick puts on national-caliber shows. For all the changes happening, traditional elements of Nashville endure.

Despite the city’s foodie turn, most everyone concurs that the finest down-home lunch spot is Arnold’s Country Kitchen. The restaurant has expanded its original Gulch address and recently opened a second location, just down the street from Patchett’s Parnassus Books.

Admiralty Law, Cruise Ship Accidents & Injuries

Carnival Cruise Line characterized the recent brawl on the Carnival Legend as limited, isolated and unprecedented. Anyone who follows the cruise industry knows that these type of fights which occur on Carnival ships are hardly rare. There literally are dozens of videos on YouTube of fights which have erupted on cruise ships over the years. The vast majority of these brawls occur on Carnival ships. The cruise line’s trade organization, CLIA, says that over 27 million passengers will take a cruise this year. Too much alcohol on increasingly gigantic ships: Cruise lines aren’t profitable based solely on their cruise fares. Pushing alcohol sales are a key part of Carnival’s fun ships. Carnival collects literally hundreds of millions of tax-free dollars a year selling booze on the Carnival Cruise Line fleet. Ill trained and and insufficient number of security guards: A common complaint we hear from passengers is that ship security does not intervene at an early stage to stop potentially violent situations from escalting and getting out of hand. In the videos below, the Carnival security personnel are often seen observing the fights or trying to stop people from taking videos of the melees. The answer to these questions is contained in the videos below, which I have ranked in order of out-of-control violence. There are far too many videos to include them all here, including the recent brawl aboard the Carnival Legend.

9 Reasons to Discover Durban, South Africa

With its sunny beaches and fascinating Afro-Indian culture, Durban is becoming a don’t-miss stop in South Africa. More Indians reside in Durban than any other country outside India itself. Durban’s Golden Mile, a 3.7 mile stretch of sandy beach, invites surfers and swimmers to enjoy the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Vendors sell assorted crafts along the shore, and you can find many beautiful swimming pools along the esplanade. Hop into a rickshaw and ride along the beach; later, dine and dance at a beachside restaurant, trendy club or luxury hotel. Look for fine dining, shopping and entertainment along Durban’s Florida Road, considered one of the city’s top spots for nightlife. Take in a Zulu experience to learn more about the culture of South Africa’s largest ethnic group. Journey about 40 miles west of Durban to see Isithumba Adventure Park, an authentic, rural Zulu village. This 85,00-seat stadium hosted the 2010 World Cup and is a venue for the Essence Festival Durban and many sporting events. Make Durban your jumping-off point for exploring the incredible scenery, wildlife, wetlands and mountains in Greater KwaZulu-Natal, roughly 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours away. The Oyster Box, a 5-star luxury boutique hotel and spa in nearby Umhlanga, overlooks the Indian Ocean. Musical Instruments & Teachers

That’s the best thing about the appointment shopping at Sound Pure. Eddie Berman is simply one of the nicest guys in the world who also knows a helluva lot about all things guitars & amps! So if you’re interested in making a major purchase, don’t hesitate to check out the guys at Sound Pure; they will not let you down! My husband and I stopped by this afternoon to look at a guitar and was told that we could not enter the store without an appointment. This was very disappointing because I was hoping to surprise my husband with another guitar! We are going to find another guitar shop. I was on my way to the shop to buy some strings for my guitar and to look around for my next purchase which I’ve saved up alot of money for , and boom I saw they carried suhr guitars. They also had a great selection of boutique guitar builders. While we didn’t make a purchase this time, we enjoyed meeting Shawn and talking shop. One of the biggest problems I had was that the shop clearly had high end stuff and I asked to play a higher gain amp and the guy said he had nothing like that but I saw vigneron amps, sunr amps, even a few Mesa boogie amps. I came in to specifically look at two guitars but was not satisfied with the service. I later looked and saw they had a GG spec guitar which I would have bought on the spot if I had known it was there. I wore my Aristocrats shirt with Guthrie on the front and was not told about this guitar. Sound Pure is world class in every respect – they’ve got an enormous collection of Acoustic and Electric Guitars and accessories, a fantastic recording studio, a drum boutique, and an elite pro-audio and recording gear department.

Three Days in Charleston- What to See and Do

Its architecture, history, and food scene have earned the city a reputation as the quintessential Southern city-not to mention the top spot on Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Cities list. You could spend day after day making your way from one amazing restaurant to the next and walking the scenic city streets every night-but sometimes a long weekend is all you have. A carriage ride is a pleasant way to get your bearings in a new city. Palmetto Carriage Rides offers hour-long guided tours throughout the city center. Start at City Market and head out along the coast, feeling the warm breeze as you make your way to Rainbow Row-a series of colorful historic buildings that date back to the late 18th century. While walking the cobbled streets, take in Charleston’s notable architecture; the city boasts the largest collection of historic buildings in the world, outside of Rome. The city boasts a collection of restored, centuries-old mansions like The Wentworth Mansion, Joseph Aiken Mansion, Nathaniel Russell House, and Calhoun Mansion, all of which shouldn’t be missed. For a quick midday meal, check out 167 Raw in the city’s French Quarter. You’re guaranteed one of the best seafood dishes in town-which is really saying something in a city that’s built on the water. For dinner, check out the Charleston Grill in the newly renovated Belmond Charleston Place-the hotel wrapped up a $34 million renovation earlier this year. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after a long day trekking about the city, as you’ll be serenaded by a live jazz band as you dine. In a culinary town like Charleston you don’t want to end your stay with just any dinner.

T & G Book Boutique

No excuse, except for his lonely heart, a pitcher of margaritas, four Bitter Bitches, and the apparent need to confess all his weaknesses to the two men he knew would bring him nothing but trouble. Just ask his crazy sisters or any of his friends, and they’d be the first to tell you: If there was a bad decision to be made, Robbie always had a knack for making it. That was the thought rolling around Robbie’s muddled brain as he stood with his best friend Elliot at the bar of CRUSH and tossed back his fourth Bitter Bitch. Forgetting his lonely life with alcohol and men who were all wrong for him seemed like an increasingly good way to cope tonight. In his skinny jeans and purple V-neck tee that was practically a second skin, Robbie had gone all out with smoky eyes and a new pink shade of gloss he’d bought a couple of days ago that tasted like-mmm, strawberries. When the two men he knew were both those things entered his mind, Robbie quickly shook his head, trying to shake them free. That is the worst idea you could have, Robbie told himself. This time, as Julien’s name ran through Robbie’s head, he made a point to roll the Jul over his tongue the way Julien had when he’d introduced himself that night at the bar. Elliot opened the contacts and scrolled down to his name, and then set it on the bar in front of Robbie. I seriously can’t wait for more of Priest, Julien and Robbie. Priest has intrigued me since we first met in the PresLocke series and then we got to know him even more with Logan and Tate. Add Robbie to the mix and I can’t help but seriously love him! Their story is just starting and I have no doubt their story is going to be as amazing as Tate and Logan’s story, May 2018 is not going to be here soon enough! About Ella.

Catalyzing CATLYST: Metro Atlanta’s People-Centric CEDS. When the Atlanta Regional Commission began preparing the 10-county metro’s new five-year Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy, it knew it wanted the planning process to encourage inclusivity. Doing so will result in a more robust talent pool and long-term economic momentum. Meeting human needs such as healthcare, housing, transit, and education is as critical to a region’s economic competitiveness as job creation and capital investment. Addressing these topics in a CEDS requires economic developers to include new partners and ideas. Siloed approaches to economic development no longer work in a people-centric strategy. Please let us know how we can assist your community with creating its own modern CEDS. Essential Questions Every Economic Developer Should Ask in 2018. With the convergence of economic, workforce, and community development at an all-time high, strengthening partnerships across your community will be critical to being more competitive. Embrace a collective impact approach that brings new partners to the table to tackle tough issues impacting economic development. To assist our clients, we interviewed more than one dozen economic developers who have experienced tragedies in the past 10 years. Each one said that having an economic recovery plan in place is of utmost importance, and that the EDO/Chamber is often in a lead role. A holistic approach goes beyond traditional measures of economic performance like sheer job creation to establish goals more reflective of a sustainable, resilient community. In many of our client communities, the key to economic competitiveness is repurposing and improving existing assets.

Expert Picks for your Montreal Vacation

Canada’s most diverse metropolis, Montréal, is an island city that favors style and elegance over order or even prosperity, a city where past and present intrude on each other daily. In some ways it resembles Vienna-well past its peak of power and glory, perhaps, yet still vibrant and grand. During Prohibition, thirsty Americans headed north to the city on the St. Lawrence for booze, music, and a good time, and people still come for the same things. On those rare weeks when there isn’t a planned event, the party continues. Clubs and sidewalk cafés are abuzz from late afternoon to the early hours of the morning. Montréal is a city that knows how to mix it up even when it’s 20 below zero. Rue St-Denis is almost as lively on a Saturday night in January as it is in July, and the festival Montréal en Lumière, or Montréal Highlights, enlivens the dreary days of February with concerts, balls, and fine food. Montréal takes its name from Parc du Mont-Royal, a stubby plug of tree-covered igneous rock that rises 764 feet above the surrounding cityscape. Old Montréal is home to museums, the municipal government, and the magnificent Basilique Notre-Dame-de-Montréal within its network of narrow, cobblestone streets. Or Downtown, bustles like many other major cities on the surface, it’s active below street level as well, in the so-called Underground City-the underground levels of shopping malls and food courts connected by pedestrian tunnels and the city’s subway system, or métro. Residential Plateau Mont-Royal and trendy neighborhoods are abuzz with restaurants, nightclubs, art galleries, and cafés. The greener areas of town are composed of the Parc du Mont-Royal and the Jardin Botanique.

The 50 Best Places to Travel in 2018

We take a look at what places are now at the forefront of the global conversation, whether for new hotels and museums or major international events. Of course, we think about those travel destinations that are perennial favorites to determine which ones are reinventing themselves, ensuring there’s always something new to explore. The island, which was spared from last fall’s brutal hurricane season, is poised to attract new luxury travelers when the Silversands Hotel opens in March 2018. Getting to the island is a cinch – JetBlue added daily service from New York City last year, and Grenada is now a port of call for 33 new cruise ships – and visitors will soon have even more options for high-end stays, with Kimpton Kawana Bay and the Levera Beach Resort both in the works. A new crop of five-star brands are coming in 2018, including the Zadún, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, the Four Seasons Los Cabos at Costa Palmas, the Montage Los Cabos, 1 Hotel & Homes, and the first Nobu Hotel in Mexico. Boutique hotels like Aloft are the new travel trend in Columbia

The newest bar in downtown Columbia serves up craft cocktails, local beer and cooler-than-you tunes by artists like ZZ Ward and MGMT. Business travelers mingle amid soft lighting in a room styled in chic shades of blue, orange, pink and gray. At the end of the evening, perhaps after slipping out to dinner in the Vista, they’ll return to the bar and retire upstairs to their bedrooms – because Columbia’s newest nightspot is also the city’s newest boutique hotel, catering to a crowd seeking a unique stay in the capital city. It certainly impressed 25-year-old Cameron Harper of Texas, who stopped into the lobby of the Aloft hotel last week to have a vodka and soda before dinner with Eric Busboom. “If I lived here, I’d come here for a staycation. As opposed to other hotels, this would feel more like a destination.” With the opening of the five-story, 107-room Aloft, at the corner of Lady and Lincoln streets, and the recent announcement of a 41-room independent hotel near Main Street, Columbia appears to be catching on with the global trend of individually styled, experience-based travel options. The trend is toward smaller, boutique-style hotels with fashionable character, purposely different from what’s typically offered by larger, traditional brands. In Columbia, the apparent rise of boutique hotels could signal that the city is more than just a business destination, but a place people increasingly come for fun, too. “Columbia has just not discovered itself and what it has to offer, but the outside world has – and that’s why all this is happening,” said Fred Delk, director of the Columbia Development Corp., which helps guide growth in the downtown area. Columbia might not be able to replicate the allure of a costal, historical city like Charleston, but it has its own charms to offer, and at a considerably lower price, said Rita Patel, who plans to open a small, non-chain hotel downtown with her husband this fall. “The people’s craving for vintage and authentic, that’s a huge, huge common theme in boutique hotels,” said Patel, who is also a partner in the new Aloft. The modern traveler wants to live like the locals, said Scott Smith, a University of South Carolina professor of hotels, restaurants and tourism. That’s a concept that boutique hotels are tapping into and even larger, more traditional brands are catching onto, he said. At Aloft, the “Live like the locals” connection looks something like the artwork by Columbia painter Julia Moore hanging in the lobby, or the floor-to-ceiling windows that create an almost seamless connection between the lobby and the Lady Street sidewalk. Smith isn’t surprised to see the chic hotel market making its way into Columbia, especially since more millennials are becoming business travelers. “We’ve got enough business out there that supports more than just a couple Holiday Inns or Marriotts. It’s a good indicator that Columbia, as a business community and as a leisure travel community, is doing well.”
