S. H. Kress & Co.

S. H. Kress & Co. was the trading name of a chain of “Five and dime” retail department stores in the United States, established by Samuel Henry Kress, which operated from 1896 to 1981. In Adickes v. S.H. Kress Co., the U.S. Supreme Court threw out convictions for vagrancy resulting from a sit-in at a Kress lunch counter in Mississippi. Genesco began liquidating Kress and closing down the Kress stores in 1980. The Kress Foundation, a philanthropic organization promoting art, was established by Kress in 1929 and also survives the parent company. “Samuel H. Kress… envisioned his stores as works of public art that would contribute to the cityscape.” A number of former Kress stores are recognized as architectural landmarks and many are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the 1913 building on Canal Street in New Orleans and the 1929 neoclassical store in Asheville, North Carolina. Notable Kress architects include Seymour Burrell, who studied in New York with architect Emmanuel Louis Masqueray, and Edward Sibbert, who designed more than fifty Art Deco S. H. Kress & Co. stores between 1929 and 1944. Sibbert’s buildings streamlined the Kress image with a sleek buff modernity, the lavish use of terracotta ornament, and strong verticals supporting the golden letters “Kress”. Asheville, NC: The Kress building on Patton Avenue in Downtown Asheville was restored in the 1990s, and is now The Kress Emporium – a gallery featuring local artists, K2 Studio – a home and furniture store, as well as condominiums in the upper floors. Biloxi, MS: The downtown Kress store was converted in 2014 into a live music venue, Kress Live. Hilo, HI: In Hilo, Hawaii, a former Kress store has been renovated into Kress Cinema, a downtown movie theater. Los Angeles: In July 2008, The Kress Hollywood nightclub and restaurant opened for a few years in the Kress building on Hollywood Boulevard. Nashville, TN: The Kress store on 5th Avenue in downtown Nashville is now two loft complexes called Art Avenue Lofts and Kress Lofts. Seattle, WA: In June 2008, an IGA Supermarket, the Kress IGA, opened on the basement level of the former Kress store in downtown Seattle. Wichita, KS: The Kress building is now called the Kress Energy Center. The Kress IGA Supermarket, Kress Hollywood, and Kress Cinema differ from many other re-purposed Kress locations due to their prominent use of the Kress name and logo as a component of the branding of the business.

Eric Sommer and The Solar Flares Clearly Visible At The Blind Tiger in Charleston, South Carolina on Friday, January 11

Eric Sommer comes to Charleston, SC on Friday, January 11th, and Charleston, South Carolina is in for a real treat. Appearing on The Blind Tiger stage in Charleston, SC will be one of the finest American singers, songwriters and red-hot guitar players on the road today – Eric Sommer. Coming off a successful tour supporting their new disc “RAINY DAY KARMA”, Mr. Sommer pulls into Charleston with one of the area’s premier bass players and arrangers – David Katillus – in tow. As founder and uber-guitar player for Boston power-pop cult band The Atomics – including shows and/or tours with The Dead Kennedys, Gang of 4, Mission of Burma and Nick Lowe bands Bram Tchaikovsky, Wreckless Eric plus acoustic acts such as David Bromberg and Jerry Douglas – Mr. Sommer appears to have come full circle back to the acoustic Americana roots he knows so well and does with skill and clarity. The Blind Tiger date – Friday, Jan 11, 9pm – in Charleston, SC is a perfect opportunity to catch these two remarkable players. Mr. Sommer tours continuously, both as a solo performer and with his trio The Solar Flares, and does around 270 shows per year. The stage set for these live shows features 6-7 guitars, 7 small amps, a series of circuit bending pedals to manipulate the slide guitar, overtones, and feedback. In contrast to the nod to ’80s wall of distortion sound is a crisp and clear finger-style guitar presentation that centers around open tunings and guitar techniques that reach across the musical spectrum to deliver a raw, indie/pop/punk sound in an acoustic format. Mr. Sommer is also a writer and road poet, and has published two collections of verse. Included are a number of short stories about growing up in rural New Jersey, and one in particular – “Mrs. Schmidt” – describes a woman who lived next door to Eric Sommer and his family in Middlebush, NJ, and where “Happenings” were created by Alan Kaprow, assisted by her son Clarence Schmidt. As Mr. Sommer describes in detail, every major artist came through her kitchen – Jim Dine, Red Grooms, Claus Oldenberg, Bob Rauschenberg – and he watched it all from the stool next to the kitchen table. Mr Sommer will be available to sign photos, CDs, posters, T-shirts and occasional guitars. You can preview some of the material online at the Eric Sommer website. Eric Sommer is represented by Clyde is Thinking, and PR programs are managed thru MTGNY; Clyde is Thinking is a small boutique management agency located in London with US offices around the United States. You can contact Mr. Sommer at 202-255-1995 or email him thru CIT at eric(at)ericsommer(dot)com.

Las Vegas, Nevada Map & Directions

Las Vegas may be known as a destination for gamblers, but there’s more to the city than just gambling. Modern Las Vegas is also one of the world’s top dining destinations, home to America’s most successful nightclubs, and a retail paradise for both high-end and bargain shoppers. Must see in Las VegasFrequently cited as one of the top tourist attractions in the world, the Bellagio fountains are a gorgeous water fixture featuring intricate choreographed water shows multiple times a night, with constantly rotating designs set to a range of music. Heading downtown, the Fremont East entertainment district is a hotbed of up-and-coming bars, restaurants, music venues and boutique shops, catering to a younger, hipper crowd. Where to stay in Las VegasIf you’re bringing the family to Vegas, you may want to stay off the Strip in a more locals-oriented hotel-casino in Summerlin or Green Valley, both of which are family-friendly, suburban neighborhoods. For young adults and those looking to party, the Strip is the hub of most of Vegas’ nightlife, including the most high-profile nightclubs, the most upscale restaurants and the most lavish production shows. If you’re on a budget, check out downtown, where hotels are cheaper but there’s still plenty to see and do, with bars and music venues within easy walking distance. Best and worst times to go to Las VegasThe best time to visit Las Vegas is in the spring, from late March to mid-May, when temperatures are warmer than most of the country but have yet to become unbearably hot. Where to get lost in Las VegasDowntown, with its cluster of hotel-casinos under the Fremont Street Experience, its bars, restaurants and boutiques in the Fremont East district, and its art galleries, coffee shops and antique stores in the 18b Arts District, is the ideal area of town for wandering and discovering something new and unexpected. The best deal in Las VegasSome of the most dazzling sights on the Strip are totally free, including the Bellagio fountain show, the Mirage volcano, the animatronic statues at Caesars Palace and the millions of dollars of fine art on display throughout CityCenter. Transportation in Las VegasLas Vegas is a pretty car-dependent town, but if you stay on the Strip and don’t intend to venture away from there, you can get by with cabs, the bus system and relatively short walks. Getting in from McCarran International AirportCabs are plentiful and eager to take you to your hotel, but check first to see if there’s a complimentary shuttle to where you’re staying. Local tip for visitors to Las VegasDon’t try to hail a cab on the street, since it’s actually illegal for drivers to pick up passengers roadside. Planning a trip to Las Vegas? Boutique hotels like Aloft are the new travel trend in Columbia

The newest bar in downtown Columbia serves up craft cocktails, local beer and cooler-than-you tunes by artists like ZZ Ward and MGMT. Business travelers mingle amid soft lighting in a room styled in chic shades of blue, orange, pink and gray. At the end of the evening, perhaps after slipping out to dinner in the Vista, they’ll return to the bar and retire upstairs to their bedrooms – because Columbia’s newest nightspot is also the city’s newest boutique hotel, catering to a crowd seeking a unique stay in the capital city. It certainly impressed 25-year-old Cameron Harper of Texas, who stopped into the lobby of the Aloft hotel last week to have a vodka and soda before dinner with Eric Busboom. “If I lived here, I’d come here for a staycation. As opposed to other hotels, this would feel more like a destination.” With the opening of the five-story, 107-room Aloft, at the corner of Lady and Lincoln streets, and the recent announcement of a 41-room independent hotel near Main Street, Columbia appears to be catching on with the global trend of individually styled, experience-based travel options. The trend is toward smaller, boutique-style hotels with fashionable character, purposely different from what’s typically offered by larger, traditional brands. In Columbia, the apparent rise of boutique hotels could signal that the city is more than just a business destination, but a place people increasingly come for fun, too. “Columbia has just not discovered itself and what it has to offer, but the outside world has – and that’s why all this is happening,” said Fred Delk, director of the Columbia Development Corp., which helps guide growth in the downtown area. Columbia might not be able to replicate the allure of a costal, historical city like Charleston, but it has its own charms to offer, and at a considerably lower price, said Rita Patel, who plans to open a small, non-chain hotel downtown with her husband this fall. “The people’s craving for vintage and authentic, that’s a huge, huge common theme in boutique hotels,” said Patel, who is also a partner in the new Aloft. The modern traveler wants to live like the locals, said Scott Smith, a University of South Carolina professor of hotels, restaurants and tourism. That’s a concept that boutique hotels are tapping into and even larger, more traditional brands are catching onto, he said. At Aloft, the “Live like the locals” connection looks something like the artwork by Columbia painter Julia Moore hanging in the lobby, or the floor-to-ceiling windows that create an almost seamless connection between the lobby and the Lady Street sidewalk. Smith isn’t surprised to see the chic hotel market making its way into Columbia, especially since more millennials are becoming business travelers. “We’ve got enough business out there that supports more than just a couple Holiday Inns or Marriotts. It’s a good indicator that Columbia, as a business community and as a leisure travel community, is doing well.”

Fender ’68 Custom Deluxe Reverb 22-watt 1×12″ Tube Combo Amp Reviews

So I sold my Marshal Stack and first purchased the Fender Super Sonic which is a great amp and and gets amazing overdrive sounds direct from the AMP. However, going to the Custom Deluxe Reverb something about having a tube rectifier makes ALL the difference, it give the amp depth and sublet nuances. So if you are looking for a Tube AMP, if the amp does not have a TUBE rectifier then its not really a Tube Amp in my opinion. A Surprisingly Versatile Amp and A Better Choice than the 65 DRRI My dream amp has long been the Fender 65 DRRI and I was planning on buying one, but when I started researching I found that the 68 had some killer features like reverb and tremelo on both channels, and two channels that aren’t the same. Fender ’68 Custom Deluxe Reverb I’m happy with everything about this amp. 68 custom deluxe reverb I am a professional player who’s played for years and has used every amp imaginable including a lot of fenders….my style is roots, blues rock and beyond and I can honestly say I’ve never been happier with an amp. After reading so many reviews of the 68 Deluxe Reverb amp reissue – including high praise from Joe Bonamassa I thought I would try it out since there were some classic Fender amp tones I could not quite get out of the Hot Rod. ’68 Custom Deluxe Reverb I bought this beauty in August and could not be happier with the amp. This friend of mine is a Tube FREAKazoid he collects tubes and plays through two vintage Deluxe Reverbs both from the early ’60’s. He is one of those tube tone guys who says that vintage is better than new….UNTIL he saw and played through my ’68 Custom Deluxe Reverb! He was very impressed! He is gonna sell his ’63 but he said he would consider getting this amp for himself ’cause he wouldn’t have keep fixing things on his vintage stuff! Point is it is a wonderful mix of Fender “something old something new, something borrowed something BLUE” when it comes to this amp you will be in 22 watt tube heaven. This is why I love fender amps This is the best sounding amp I’ve had the pleasure of playing since keeping a 65 super reverb amp for a friend 30 years ago. ’68 Custom Deluxe Reverb I recently started looking for a new amp in hopes of simplifying my rig and making it easier to setup & transport. The reverb sounds great, it is brighter, but not as deep as the ’65’s. Besides guitar, I play vintage keyboards, and this amp is incredible with a Wurlitzer electric piano or a Hohner Clavinet! The first of these amps had lots of problems, and I had to return a few, but luckily, a place like Sweetwater will work with you until you get an amp that works great. 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb The first impressive thing, taking this out of the box, is the beauty of the amp. Fender Custom ’68 Deluxe Reverb These days it seems that Fender is offering almost as many “Deluxe” amps models as Strats, and each new seems more exciting than the last. Determined to not have to wait for yet another amp I sought the next possible problem might be the rca connector cable, so I swapped the cable from amp #2. Voila! Now I finally had a working amp. The spring reverb is a big reason I got this amp in the first place, however anytime the reverb was up past 4 or 5 there would be a slow swelling of feedback that would eventually build so loud that the only way to stop it was to turn the reverb all the way down.

The Whiskey

The Whiskey by 65amps is a collaboration between two long time peers and friends; 65amps and LA tone guru Dave Friedman. Going for the throttled up sound of “The Strip” in Los Angeles, Dan and Dave were able to find that unique sound in a format that is useable in a modern context. In addition to very authentic and rich distortion, the clean sound on The Whiskey is loud and proud. The clean channel is completely outside of the Master Volume circuit so the normal compromise of a mediocre clean sound in a high-gain amp is gone. The Whiskey gives all the classic sounds that we associate with hot-rodded British amps without going into Ubergain. The Whiskey runs its pair of 6L6’s with a 3x12AX7 preamp. American Made High Grade Transformers made in Chicago – The Whiskey also features a custom, hand-wound choke made by Mercury Magnetics in Los Angeles. SoZos are the most musical, consistent and complete sounding capacitors on the market. Made to the highest standards in the USA. In our opinion, these are the best sounding and most consistent capacitors made today. Aluminum Chassis – All of our chassis are made from high-grade aluminum here in Los Angeles. Authentic Allen-Bradley Carbon Comp resistors where it counts – In the signal path of all 65amps are the best sounding resistors known: Allen-Bradley Carbon Comps. Renown for decades as the “Magic” part required for getting “That” sound, the Allen-Bradley resistor is an unparalleled finishing touch for your tone.

Mosrite Guitars

Mosrite is an American guitar manufacturing company, Originally based in Bakersfield, California in 1952. Today it does all of it’s American Manufacturing In Las Vegas, NV. Imports are strictly Japanese by Japan’s best guitar factory “Tokai”. Virtually everyone who is anyone has owned a Mosrite at some time in their life. Larry Gatton, Rick Springfield, & hundreds of well known musicians have all been captured by the allure of the Mosrite guitar. During the 60’s The Mosrite Fuzzrite was the creme de la creme of distortion devices. In the 60’s a Mosrite was priced at approximately double of a Fender Stratocaster. The cost of all the integral parts of the Mosrite forced the price up. Jimi would commonly smash and burn his easily replaceable Fenders but the Mosrite’s were treasured and well taken care of. “A friend of Moseley, a singing preacher named Rev. Ray Boatright, was deeply impressed with Moseley’s guitar designs, and put up front money for Moseley to found his guitar company. In gratitude, Moseley named the company by combining his and Boatright’s last names. It is generally pronounced”MÖZE-right. Mosrite guitars were known for innovative design, beautiful engineering, very thin, low-fretted and narrow necks, and extremely hot pickups. Moseley’s design for the Ventures, known as the “Ventures Model” was generally considered to be the flagship of the line, but all of his guitars bore his unmistakable touch. Mosrite also produced an unusual double-necked guitar, which was the type favored by Collins and Maphis; this design was also used by Nick Nastos, lead guitar player for Bill Haley & His Comets, during 1968.
