Guitar Oracle: Fender Mustang III

Not every guitar player chooses Fender products, of course, but it’s undeniable that the establishment of the electric guitar as a prominent instrument is strongly connected to Fender’s history. The Fender Mustang amp series has been such a success that Fender decided to add the Mustang III, the IV, the V, the Floor and the Mini to the catalog. FENDER MUSTANG III – A REVIEW. The Fender Mustang III boasts 100 watts of power, 100 preset slots, 12 amp models and 37 effects. There is a USB input/output for firmware updates, exchange of presets between the PC and your amplifier, sending the output of the amp to the computer for recording, configuring the amp settings through the computer…. The Fender Mustang III has 60 more watts than the Mustang II, 76 more preset slots, a LED with menus and all the features of the amp are unlockable through the amplifier alone. If you’re looking for a Fender tone, the Fender Mustang REALLY is your best friend.

PRESS RELEASE: Boutique Guitar Pedals & Winter NAMM 2016

While buying a new guitar or amplifier can cost in the thousands of dollars, guitar pedals are usually relatively affordable in comparison and can even offer a more dramatic change in tone. In recent years a surge of new boutique builders has brought along a wave of exciting new pedals that have pushed the market forward like never before, greatly expanding the tonal palette that guitar players can draw upon. While the topic of Builders vs Designers vs Innovators is a conversation for another day, there’s no denying that today’s boutique pedal companies are spearheading innovation and creating the majority of the most desirable pedals available today. Joel Korte, founder of Minnesota-based Chase Bliss Audio has seen sales double in the last year and adds, “Musicians like to experiment with sound using pedals because the experience is very visceral and pedals are hands-on and offer the artist control right away.” Pete Celi, co-founder of growing Southern California builder Strymon, says interest in vintage pedals has skyrocketed, including tape delays, vintage amp tremolos, pedals from the 70s, but he notes these originals can be unreliable on tour and prices make those purchases beyond the reach of most musicians.

Custom Handbuilt Boutique Guitar Amps

I guess my obsession with tube amps began with the re-cab of an old Vibro Champ. A bigger cabinet and speaker made it sound huge! I couldn’t believe what a big difference could be made without messing with the amplifier circuitry. One thing lead to another, and Cave Valley Amps was born. I’d always prefered the way tube amps sounded, but found that most of the mainstream amps were out of my price range, especially the vintage amps. I picked up an old Vibro Champ with a wrecked cabinet, and so began my odyssey into amp building. My original plan was just to build an amp for myself. It started off simple, but the amps grew bigger, louder and more complex as I searched to find the “Holy Grail” of tone. I built so many amps, that they were litereally piled up around the house. In an attempt to make some room and thin out the heard, I started giving away amps to friends and family who were guitar players. Everyone was amazed at how much better the handbuilt tube amps sounded than their solid state amps and asked for more. With the encouragement of my family and friends, Cave Valley Amps became official. These include but are not limited to the Fullerton California Tweed amps, the Jennings AC amps, and the 18 watt Plexi amps. My goal is to make a product that has a high level of craftsmanship, is tonally superior, completely custom, and affordable for the everyday average guitar slinger. I love talking amps, and hopefully can steer you toward an amp or a sound that you’ve been searching for.

Joe Bonamassa’s 5 Most Underrated Amps

Even after a cursory glance at Joe Bonamassa’s Twitter and Facebook page, it’s easy to tell this guy is into great vintage gear. From the rows and rows of Fender combos to a few vintage Marshall stacks, Bonamassa doesn’t discriminate-if it’s a benchmark for a great guitar tone, he has one. “I love talking about amps. It’s so much better than talking about other stuff,” Bonamassa gleams from his home in Los Angeles. When talking about his most underrated amps, the excitement in his voice was palpable. A genuine curiosity and interest came across, and when he touched on each amp it was as if he was reconnecting with an old friend. Lab Series L5. Everyone knows it as the “B.B. King” amp, but it’s also the Ronnie Montrose amp-and the Ty Tabor amp. I like the immediacy of the older solid-state amps-they’re so punchy. The new digital solid-state junk is another story, but the old stuff is killin’. B.B.’s tone is great with the Lab Series. It’s warm and creamy and much more consistent than a Twin. You can generally get one of these for between $350 and $500. It’s a really cheap, Russian amp made of military parts with poor solder joints that’s basically a hot-rodded Bassman. They were made in the early ’90s and are definitely road-worthy. It’s one of the biggest-sounding, small Fender combo amps ever made. They’re pricey-usually between $2,500 and $3,000.

Custom Hand-Built Guitar Amps

The Electric Lunchbox series consists of the Luxolite, Bottle Rocket and Li’l Prince – three conveniently sized tube heads rated at 15 to 17 Watts of power. Despite their small footprint, don’t mistake these as being appropriate only for the studio or home use. All three feature a pair of 6V6 power tubes in “Push-pull” operation to provide a variety of juicy tone that will easily cut through the mix in a band setting. Having a matched pair of 6V6 power tubes as well as two more preamp tubes is where the similarities among these three heads ends. Each member of the Electric Lunchbox family has a unique voice and character all its own. Each product page contains a fantastic video featuring all three amps, each being used with a variety of guitars to highlight their versatility and many strengths.

Boutique Guitar Amplifiers & Audio Equipment

Oxygen is located in Vancouver, BC, Canada and builds amplifiers for those that are truly serious about tone. Oxygen is set apart from the others because of our third generation London Power Scaling. Our circuit is completely transparent! By adjusting the volume and gain accordingly you are able to achieve the same tone and gain characteristics at power levels around 1 Watt which is ideal for even the smallest venues. Our builders in conjunction with Kevin O’Connor, the originator of power scaling, have developed the latest iteration of this proven system to reduce power output. Since the Oxygen power scaling reduces power by reducing voltage to the output stage, the result is clean tone without sacrificing tube life. By contrast, master volume controls just limit the signal to the output stage, not the output stage power. Attenuators, on the other hand, reduce power output by creating an artificial load after the output stage. This requires the output stage to run at maximum power which negatively impacts transformer and tube life. We are so confident that this is the best way to achieve power scaling that we have licensed the technology from Kevin O’Connor. We would point out that the major downside to using EF86 tubes is microphonics. If you’re lucky, it will take 10 tubes to find ONE that performs satisfactorily. We, at Oxygen, feel that the downsides to using EF86’s outweigh the benefits particularly when there are other great tubes that deliver exceptional “Cream” tone. We have chosen to use the 5879 tube in the cream channel. You’ll be relieved when you replace the tube one day and the new one delivers tone that is just as good as you’ve come to expect.

Design And Build Your Own Tube Guitar Amp

It is because of the electric guitar amp that vacuum tubes are still being manufactured today. Visit your local guitar store and take a peek at the rear side of the amps, you’ll most likely see a variety of glass tubes projecting from the amp chassis. Guitar amps with tubes are currently front and center in the high-end market because many guitar players find their sound characteristics to be superior to solid-state amps. Modern mass produced tube amps use printed circuit boards to connect components, but at the extreme high-end there are “Boutique” amp builders who hand wire connections from point-to-point and select high quality components. Point-to-point wiring is how vintage guitar amps from the 1950’s and 60’s were wired and it’s a technique that allows for easy maintenance and circuit modification. Boutique amp builders are individuals or small companies who build a relatively small number of amps each year with an emphasis on quality and attention to detail. Boutique amps are usually priced in the thousands of dollars, because they require a lot more time and skill to produce. Most boutique amp builders at one time started out as electronics hobbyists who thought it would be fun to modify or build their own tube amp. The internet continues to make it easier to find books and parts to help you build your own boutique quality guitar amp. The quickest way to get acquainted with the parts and standard layout techniques used in tube amp building is to build an amp kit. If you’re interested in more of a challenge than building a kit, classic tube amp schematics are easy to find on-line and their patents are likely to be long since expired. Most of the boutique amps being made today are cloned vintage Fender and Marshall amps or at least heavily influenced by their circuits. There are also many books on the subject of tube amp circuit theory, design and building that you can read to help make your first build of boutique quality. Happy building! â–¡. Kurt Prange is the Sales Engineer for Amplified Parts in Tempe, AZ. Kurt began playing guitar at the age of nine in Kalamazoo, MI. He is a guitar DIY’er and tube amp designer who enjoys helping other musicians along in the endless pursuit of tone.

Quilter Amps

Costa Mesa, CA, – Punahou alumnus and QSC Audio Products and Quilter Labs founder Patrick Quilter has agreed to make a $1.6 million donation over the next five years to his former high school, Punahou School, located in Honolulu, Hawai’i. Quilter’s generous gift will help support the building fund for a new recital hall, dubbed the Patrick H. Quilter Concert Hall, with additional funds earmarked for the purchase of fretted stringed instruments and traditional Hawaiian instruments for Punahou students. “My Punahou physics course taught me everything I needed to know to get started in electronics and laid a foundation that allowed me to begin building my first crude circuits in college,” says Quilter, who graduated from Punahou in 1964. “Punahou is deeply grateful for Pat Quilter’s generous leadership gift, which will benefit students for decades to come,” says Punahou School President James K. Scott. The Patrick H. Quilter Concert Hall, which is in the preliminary planning stage, will provide a new and much-needed acoustically treated performance venue for students. The son of a Marine aviator, Quilter enrolled at the University of Rochester after graduating from Punahou where he studied Physics and Mechanical Engineering. After two years in New York, Quilter relocated to Southern California to be with this family, where he completed his formal studies at Cal State Long Beach. In 1968, Quilter along with business partners Barry Andrews and John Andrews formed Quilter Sound Company and began building power amplifiers and guitar amplifiers to meet the needs of local musicians and artists. In 2011, Quilter returned to his passion of designing and building guitar amplifiers and founded Quilter Labs where he designs and builds guitars amplifiers for some today’s biggest artists in music. “I was privileged to attend Punahou and I am elated to be able to give something back to an institution that had such a huge impact upon me. I am please that this contribution will support the future of music, Punahou, our industry, and my personal passion for music,” concludes Quilter. Groundbreaking on the Patrick H. Quilter Concert Hall will commence within the next five to six years. Quilter Labs, LLC is the brainchild of designer/engineer/musician and QSC founder Pat Quilter. Quilter opened for business on January 1st, 2011 designing and building a line of products to fill a need of working musicians for high quality, powerful and easily portable amplifiers that don’t compromise on tone. How To Start Your Own Boutique Amp or Effects Company

4a. You’ll need to pimp a ‘prototype’ so you’ll need to create a lot of forum user names/accounts at the various fetish sites so you can create the illusion of mass enjoyment; you’ll need to round up a few idiots at these same fetish forums that, with the right linguistic magical formulas, can be sold on the musical and mystic virtues of any old hunk of crap. Stroke their egos by having them ‘beta test’ your kit or import, they’ll provide a bunch of idiotic feedback, you’ll change the color of the knobs, and then these fools will do all the free sales work for you and rabidly defend whatever it is you’re selling because they have ‘invested’ not only some $ in this but their egos as well. Don’t worry, they’re as stupid if not more so than the herd members you’ll be dealing with online. Here’s the tricky part: you’ll soon have far too many orders to fill so what you need to do is announce a new custom tweaked model, a special run featuring unicorn tears, whatever, that costs twice ten times as much and take as many preorders as you can. Cook up a new, super cool name for a pedal/amp company and start all over.

Review: THR10C high-end boutique home/studio amp from Yamaha

Three new models made a U.S. debut at the Winter NAMM Show back in January 2013, and I’ve been discovering exactly what VCM tubes sound like with the THR10C solid state boutique home/studio amp. “What that means in the real world, is that the amp models in THR actually respond like a tube amp – from the fact that turning up the master volume changes not only the loudness, but also the tone, compression and distortion characteristics to the fact that the amp responds to picking dynamics and attack in the same way as a cranked tube amp – because our VCM algorithms are capable of reproducing the way individual, analog components actually effect and interact with both the signal passing through them and each other,” he continued. “While they are based on classic amps as a starting point or reference, they’re not designed to be a perfect simulation of another amp. Instead, our engineers create the best sounding amp based on that type of circuit they can make – just like amp modifiers like Mesa Boogie, Splawn and a host of other boutique amp companies – but our engineers have a VCM software toolkit instead of a box of components and a soldering iron.” Like classic tube amps, each of the virtual amp circuits in Yamaha’s boutique home/studio amp proved quite responsive to the controls on the guitar and, in an interesting twist, the character of the available ambient and modulation effects also changed in keeping with the chosen Amp setting. Quite rightly, in my opinion, it will likely find a home with musicians looking for something that can give a vintage low gain, hand-wired boutique amp sound in a small and lightweight package.

What is “Boutique”?

We’re going to examine the word “Boutique,” as applied to music gear, and consider how the defining criteria may have changed in the past few years. Boutique, as a description and a concept, was originally used in reference to custom-built amplifiers dating back to the ’70s. Dumble and early Mesa/Boogie amps were considered boutique. The boutique amp movement gained momentum in the early ’90s, when such makers as D’az, Trainwreck, Matchless, and Kendrick demonstrated the demand among musicians for these products. The boutique aesthetic soon made its way into the rest of the player’s signal chain, including, most notably, effects devices. I first addressed this topic in Analog Man’s Guide to Vintage Effects, in a chapter titled “State of the Stomp Today,” where I wrote, “The term boutique is commonly used to describe high-quality, handmade effects built in small-scale production runs without the use of automation or mass-production techniques, thus allowing for greater attention to detail and custom-tuning of individual units. Obviously, the price of these effects will be significantly greater than most of the mass-produced offerings of the larger manufacturers. Many players question whether the benefits of boutique really warrant the investment. It is decidedly a niche market, attracting only the most discerning ears and discriminating tastes.” Later in the chapter I wrote, “Part of the popularity of boutique may lie in its grassroots, back-to-basics appeal. There is a sense that you have a product of fine craftsmanship made by a real person who’s into what he’s doing, not some faceless corporation cranking them out by the thousands, always with an eye on the bottom line. We want to believe that the boutique pedal we’ve just purchased is a labor of love, made with the finest ingredients. It’s the difference between fresh-baked, homemade Tollhouse cookies and Chips Ahoy.”. The paragraphs above say as much about customer expectations and perceptions as they do about what qualifies an item to be labeled boutique. The delineation of what was and what wasn’t boutique seemed fairly clear at that time, precluding the need for any particular set of standards that would patently identify a product as boutique. The stompbox market has indeed grown and changed substantially in just a few short years, and this in turn has impacted not only the process of boutique manufacturing, but also the products themselves. A number of programmable digital effects now on the market are considered boutique. At the same time, a couple of pioneering boutique effects brands-namely Fulltone and Z. Vex-are now so widely distributed that they’re available at Guitar Center. These are just a couple of examples that blur the boundaries between boutique and mass-produced effects. It’s not surprising that the understanding and context of what’s boutique seems to have become hazy and less distinct to the average player. What exactly is boutique? Do we need a new definition, or do we need another word? Check with us next time as we get down and dirty with all the details.

Guitar Amplifier Handbook: Dave Hunter: 9780879308636: Amazon.com: Books

I bought this book several years ago when I was just starting out on my path toward learning about guitar amps. At the time, I thought that this book was great, and would have given it five stars. This is because the book is organized well, and SEEMS to present information well. Even as I was reading the book as a neophyte, I got the impression that the author knew about as much as I did, but did a great job transcribing what was written by the “Experts” interviewed. As I’ve learned the workings of amps, I realized that some of the points presented in the book are misleading. I long ago threw the book out, but one thing sticks with me: The book is organized into “Information” in the first section and “Expert interviews” in the second. Now, wire of one color contains different atoms in the insulation than wire of another color. Throughout the book, quite a big deal is made over having virtually nothing in the signal path. The author seems to think that the mark of an outstanding amp is having as little in it as possible. You certainly can have TOO many controls on an amp, but to present a minimalist approach as an unquestioned philosophy is simply wrong. It’s impossible to know this if you’re new to amps. Some information in the book is correct and valuable, so why wouldn’t all of it be? You’re presented with a whole package of info, and the wrong impressions that you walk away with will potentially be more damaging than the nuggets of truth. Finally, what I found most strange, is that that a complete theoretical overview of the workings of a vacuum tube amp are not provided. If you want to find out about tube amps, first know the basics of electronics.

The TS100 provides a 50/50 watt stereo all tube power amplifier for rack guitar systems, and allows you to add more cabinets to our other guitar amplifiers as Steve Vai has done. The V3M Series amps take many of the popular features of the V3 Series, and incorporate them in a small light weight package that packing 50 watts of power from four EL84 power tubes. The versatility of the V3m comes from the all tube gain, three tone characters on each channel and the EQ expansion switch covering many genres and playing styles. Guitar Amplifiers

Guitar amp combos are usually fine for garage bands, or small gigs, but if you plan to play a large hall or outdoor area frequently, you will want to go with a separate head unit and speaker cabinet arrangement which ultimately will have more power and ability to project. What about tube amps as opposed to solid state? In reality, solid state amps can produce a cleaner tone at greater volume levels than tube amps, but in our opinion, can lack the warmth of a tube based guitar amplifier. Nowadays, many mainstream guitar amp manufacturers will manufacture their own speakers cones for installation in their combos or cabinets, but some of the higher end brands will put brand name speakers, like Celestion, in their amps. What about all this modeling mumbo jumbo? Modeling is a way that guitar amplifier manufacturers have developed to allow guitarists like you to experience tones from several different rigs, or even effects units, all while using one guitar amp combo or head and cabinet rig. If you plan to, or already have, an advanced guitar effects unit however, we would recommend you stay away from modeling amps and stick to a combo or head/stack unit that has the best performance and pure sound.
