Florida State Road A1A is a patchwork of coastal highway along much of the state’s scenic Atlantic coast, alternating between the mainland and narrow barrier islands. Enjoy the best bits of this 339-mile highway, starting at the Art Deco-lined beachfront of South Beach, Miami and inching up to the wide, sparkling beaches of Fort Lauderdale. Gawk at the mansions of tony Palm Beach and later cross over to the nature-steeped environs of Vero Beach and Merritt Island, where birds and manatees rule. End at the nation’s oldest city, Spanish-influenced St. Augustine.
Where to stop: In Vero Beach, get in the passenger’s seat for a seaplane ride over the most biodiverse lagoon ecosystem in the Northern Hemisphere, Indian River Lagoon. Spot loggerhead sea turtles, bald eagles, alligators, and manatees from above, before a water landing in Blue Cypress Conservation area. Treasure Coast Seaplanes offers scenic flights daily. Where to eat: When you’re in Fort Lauderdale, sip on rum cocktails and feast on beach-focused cuisine at chic waterfront restaurant, Burlock Coast Seafare & Spirits. Where to stay: In St.
Augustine, book a room at The Collector Luxury Inn & Gardens, a 30-key adaptive reuse of late 18th-century homes.
North Carolina Coastal Community
Summerhouse on Everett Bay, a North Carolina coastal community less than ten minutes from Topsail Island, is a breath of fresh air. It’s that community where neighbors are like family. The pace barely vacillates from season to season. Whether you’re fond of sailing, boating, kayaking along the Intracoastal Waterway, or hanging out by the community’s spectacular pool complex, it’s every water-lover’s paradise. Seafood restaurants, boutique shops, and miles of expansive beaches abound.
Summerhouse residents can kayak and paddle board on the Intracoastal Waterway in the mornings eight months out of the year, then join friends by the pool or at the clubhouse in the afternoons. A coastal North Carolina summer evening just isn’t complete a sunset cruise coupled with an incidental wildlife tour. Surf City and Downtown Wilmington are less than 45 minutes away. Summerhouse on Everett Bay is also famous for its warm and welcoming signature homes. In each home, luxury blends with coastal casual and open floor plans sprawl.
Equally important, is the ocean… just beyond most front porches. We’re such big fans of Summerhouse’s signature homes that we voted one Summerhouse Everett Bay home the 2017 Ideal Home.
Charleston, South Carolina – a Wonderful, Walkable City
It’s more than The Battery, more than the tourists, more than the colorful, majestic, historic houses. We spent two nights in Charleston and only nipped the top of seeing this city that continues to retain its character decade after decade. It’s an easy place to walk around, just keep a wary eye on the tourists and their sometimes erratic driving. We stayed at the Courtyard Marriott on Calhoun Street, which was an easy location for walking and navigating the city. The staff was very helpful, the hotel quiet, and our view was colorful.
Pane e Vino had a relaxed atmosphere with delicious, delicate food. The ambience, sitting outside, was quiet and comfortable. We found two delightful, decidedly different, places. Jack’s-a casual diner with great staff and simple, but yummy food and Breizh Pan Crepes-authentically made in the truest French manner. Our weekend was full of rain, sometimes light, sometimes torrential.
Despite that, Charleston was a unique experience that bears a return trip sometime very soon. Next week, a tour of a couple of plantation houses and a few other sights.
The Playlist You Should to Listen to Depending on the City You’re Visiting
Find out the songs locals love listening to most in 22 cities across the U.S. America is full of rich musical history, but that doesn’t mean we all agree on what to listen to. To show just how diverse our musical tastes can be from coast to coast, Spotify has teamed up with Visit the USA, part of U.S. marketing organization Brand USA, to put together a series of playlists based on the songs locals listen to most in 22 different cities across the country. Visit the USA chose 22 cities known for their musical offerings, like Nashville and New Orleans, as well as up-and-comers like Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Spotify customized each playlist based on the listening habits of users in each of the cities, comparing this data to their aggregate user base to pull the top hits. Each of the playlists can be viewed on Visit the USA’s Spotify page starting Thursday, April 19, and on Visit the USA’s website starting Monday, April 23.
